NEW TESTAMENT · JOHN 2:1-11
A wedding feast in Cana, in the hills of Galilee. The wine has
run out — a public disgrace for the family.
Mary, the mother of Jesus, turns to him quietly. "They have no
wine." Jesus answers: "Woman, my hour has not yet come." But she
turns to the servants and says, simply:
"Do whatever he tells you."
Jesus points to six stone jars meant for ceremonial washing.
"Fill them with water." The servants fill them to the brim.
"Now draw some out, and take it to the master of the feast."
What was water is now wine. The best wine of the night. The
master of the feast laughs in confusion — most hosts serve the
good wine first, then the cheap. This one has been saved for the
end.
The first miracle. The first sign. Illustrated in the tradition
of 19th-century academic biblical painting.
